An Overwhelming Majority of Voters Believe a Woman’s Right to Choose is Protected in the Michigan Constitution

Economy, immigration, and inflation rank as top issues for candidates to talk about

LANSING, Mich. – An overwhelming majority – 81% – of Michigan voters believe that a woman’s right to choose and reproductive rights are protected as a result of Proposal 3’s passage in 2022. Only 11% of respondents believe otherwise, according to the MRG, LLC-commissioned Fall 2024 Michigan Poll®.  The statewide survey of 605 registered voters was conducted October 7-10.

The belief that a woman’s reproductive rights are protected spans all geographical corners of the state and age groups. Across the political spectrum, 91% of Democrats surveyed believe it is protected, along with 75% of Republicans and 73% of Independents believing the same.

What Voters Want Candidates to Talk About

When asked the top issue they would like candidates to discuss on the campaign, respondents ranked economy and jobs (28%), immigration (18%), and inflation (13%) as the top three priorities. Economy and jobs ranked first at 26% from those who self-identified as pro-choice, and 33% from those in the age group of 35-49. It also ranked first across all political affiliations with Democrats at 25%, and both Independents and Republicans at 29%.

“Candidates have been trying to relitigate the abortion topic this cycle, but voters believe this issue was settled at the ballot box in 2022,” said Jenell Leonard, Owner of MRG, LLC. “Instead, voters want to hear candidates talk about issues that are at the top of their minds: jobs and the economy, inflation, and immigration.”

The Questions and Results

The results and the wording of the questions asked by MRG follow.

Q. In 2022, Michigan voters voted to pass an amendment to the State Constitution that establishes a right to “reproductive freedom,” including the right to make all decisions about pregnancy and abortion. Knowing that Michigan’s constitution now protects a woman’s right to have an abortion through all 9 months of pregnancy for any reason, and that abortion is also now protected in more than a dozen places in state law, do you believe a woman’s right to choose is protected in Michigan [If believe/don’t believe would that be strongly believe/don’t believe or somewhat believe/not believe]?

Q. When considering your support for a candidate, what issues would you like to see them discuss on the campaign? [Rotate options]

MRG Michigan Poll® Fall 2024

The survey of 600 likely Michigan voters was conducted by live phone interview from October 7 to October 11, 2024. The sample was randomly drawn from a listed sample of all registered voters with a history of voting and stratified by city and township to reflect voter turnout. Quotas for gender and cell phone interviews were met within each geographic area, and extra efforts were made to reach African Americans. Some columns or results may not add up to 100% because of rounding. Individual rounding may impact final totals. This survey yields a sampling margin of error of ±4 percent with a 96 percent confidence interval. The sampling margin of error for subgroups may be higher depending on the size of the subgroup.
